Physical inactivity is estimated to cause more than five million deaths a year worldwide, has also been found to cost the global economy $67.5 billion a year in health care and productivity losses. According to findings published in ‘The Lancet’, which unveiled the yearly losses, an hour a day of exercise could eliminate most of that burden. The sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity which is commonly found in both the developed and developing world.
Sedentary lifestyles are linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, researchers found. However, activity – such as brisk walking – could counter the higher likelihood of early death linked with sitting for eight or more hours a day. According to the researchers, the greatest risk of premature death was for people who sat for long periods of time and did not exercise.
Giving details of their findings at a briefing in London, the international team of researchers warned that there has been too little progress in tackling a “pandemic of physical inactivity”.
